Since Nick returned to the UK life has quickly resumed to normal again. I have had two more selling days on the beach in Almyrida – despite the wind – because frankly, I cannot afford not to. At this time of year my bank account is at its lowest so I am desperate to start making money by selling my Seashell Mosaics and Collages to the tourists that have been flooding into Almyrida. I have been having a great time this past week! I have also been getting the rest I so badly needed, enjoying sunny beachcombing days and lunches out with Nick. Easter weekend was spent with lots of friends and frivolity, over-indulging in both food and alcohol. On Easter Saturday at midnight we all watched Judas burn in the great fire in Plaka Square, as is the usual tradition here on Crete. I wrote about it in more detail last year. Continue reading

I got the Carnival all wrong because it only took place in Rethymnon and not Kalives as we’d first thought. I’ve been to the Rethymnon Carnival a couple of times and it’s a pretty big one with thousands of participators and visitors. All the Greeks really dress up and there is very loud music coming out of enormous speakers in the streets. The partying carries on all weekend. Continue reading

I can’t believe how quickly the time is passing and that it’s only 8 more days before I return to the UK for 3 weeks of Christmas and New Year. I can’t wait! What a cracking day yesterday’s Almyrida Xmas Fayre was! This is a charity event in aid of the poor and needy children in the area and always raises a substantial amount of money. My Mum is amazing! She is 76… or 77 – I can’t remember now, fighting fit and no challenge is ever too big for her! No way does she look her age!
When I was over at Mum’s in Javea, in September, I showed her all the shells that I’d picked up from The Arenal – her local beach and she said she would go and pick more of the same and then bring them over to the UK with her at Christmas. Continue reading
Well it’s been another eventful week. The day my birthday falls on is also my Name Day here. In Greece a person’s Name Day is more important than their Birthday and the fact that they fall on the same day is quite significant I think – another sign that Crete is part of my destiny and also feels like my spiritual home. In my last blog I mentioned that I hadn’t been out much lately but on Saturday I was in the mood for socialising with friends and enjoying a few glasses of wine. So at 6.30pm I kicked off the evening at my local Taverna, Vangeli’s. I had a couple of glasses of wine and a bite to eat whilst catching up with all the local gossip.
